Final Overview

1.      Total course points available: 640.

a.       Six semester exams @80pts. each (lowest of 7 is dropped) for 480 points. “Base” final, 160.

b.      Final depends on how many semester exams you’ve missed.

                                                   i.      Missed 0: worth 160 points.

                                                 ii.      Missed 1: worth 160 + 80 points.

                                                iii.      Missed 2: worth 160 + 2 x 80 points.

                                               iv.      Missed 3: worth 160 + 3 x 80 points.

2.      Two Parts to the final: Base and Variable

a.       Base part: “Exam 8”-type exam + “light” comprehensive: everyone takes this part.  Worth 160 points.  The “light” part will be pretty easy, all multiple choice.

b.      Variable part: level of difficulty will be higher than during the semester to be fair to those who took the exams.  Likely to be all problems, no multiple-choice.

                                                   i.      If you missed no exams, you are done as of the fixed part.

ii.      If you missed one exam you take an exam based on that exam’s materials.  This part is worth 80 points.

iii.      If you missed two exams you retake two separate parts based on each exam’s materials.  Each part is worth 80 points.

iv.      If you missed three exams you retake three separate parts based on each exam’s materials.  Each part is worth 80 points.

                                                 v.      If you missed four or more exams (my records show 7 students in this category as of Exam 6) you have the option of arranging extra time for you to complete the additional parts you will need (30 minutes per part).

1.      You must talk to me or e-mail me by the end of lecture on 4/26 (Wednesday of Dead Week) if you want to arrange this.

2.      If you do not, you will have to finish all of your missed parts and the Base part within the 2-hour final exam period 9:45-11:45am.

3.      Double-check your online scores to see which parts you need to take: also, there are still two “unclaimed” exams.

c.       Examples

                                                   i.      Student A missed Exam 3 and Exam 5.  Student A will complete the Base final, turn it in, come down for the “Exam 3” part, complete it, turn it in, come down for the “Exam 5” part, complete it, turn it in.

ii.      Student B missed Exams 1, 3, 4, and 6.  Student B contacts me to arrange a 30-minute period to take the Exam 6 part sometime during finals week, and takes the Base part and Exams 1,3,4 parts during the final exam period.

3.      Other notes:

a.       Bring a NON-PROGRAMMABLE/NON-GRAPHING calculator.  No cell phones as calculators.

b.      I will be out of town without e-mail access from after class next Friday 4/28 to the morning of the final, so any questions or issues you have need to be asked before the end of class on 4/28.
