Rules and Guiding Principles for the No Free Lunch Club

Purpose: The purpose of the No Free Lunch Club is to meet in an informal and non-threatening environment to present and discuss research in its early stages. Members of the club meet for one hour every Friday from 12-1 in Heady 568. Generally the club opens for membership early in the fall semester every year, and members are requested to make a one-year commitment if they are in residence for the entire year.

Presentation format: The speaker is provided with 20 minutes of presentation time to be interrupted only by clarifying questions. After that vigorous discussion is allowed and encouraged. Types of presentations, which are welcome, include, but are not limited to:

  • Discussion of an idea, which has not yet been formalized.
  • Presentation of a paper in its very early stages
  • Presentation of a paper under revision with the purpose of obtaining feedback on how to modify the paper to accommodate requests of referees/editors.

No Free Lunch: All members commit to paying for pizza for everyone on a rotating basis.

Attendance: It is expected that members attend every week if possible.

Presentation: All members are expected to contribute with a presentation (or more!) approximately once a year.
